Friday’s Piece

“Here was an old owl liv’d in an oak

The more he heard, the less he spoke;

The less he spoke, the more he heard

O, if men were all like that wise bird!”

(Punch 1875)

  1. When I was in primary school a friend and I got busted for talking in class. Our punishment was that we both had to learn the poem in this piece and recite it in front of the whole school at the next assembly. We memorised it, practiced it together, and when the assembly came we were both quaking in our boots, dreading to have to go up on stage.

    As it turned out we were never called up to perform, for us it was the longest assembly ever! Looking back it was quite a clever punishment!
