Thursday’s Piece

A glass of port in his hand and a fat cigar in his mouth, with a huge and bloody red steak which he puts in his mouth in big chunks, and chew and chatters and smokes until the blood trickles down his chin – and to think this monster comes of a good family.

Saturday’s Piece

“I have watched this famous island descending incontinently, fecklessly, the stairway which leads to a dark gulf. It is a fine broad stairway at the beginning, but after a bit the carpet runs ends. A little farther on there are only flagstones, and a little farther still these break beneath your feet.”

Wednesday’s Piece

“I do not understand,” said Lord Salisbury as they walked together one day, “what your real political position is.”

“Oh, I am a ‘Smithite’, Lord Salisbury,” replied Sir Henry reverentially – “a convinced ‘Smithite’ in politics.”

“But what is your object?”

“To do good, simply to do good,” was the reply.
